Restoration, Representation, and the Power of Intention: Inside 5 Star Beauty Collection
In an industry saturated with trends that come and go, 5 Star Beauty Collection stands apart—not because it’s chasing what’s next, but because it’s rooted in something deeper. For its founder, beauty was never just about appearance. It was always about care, dignity, and restoration.
“5 Star Beauty Collection was born out of necessity, legacy, and divine assignment,” she says. With decades of experience in the beauty industry, her work extended far beyond styling. She supported women and men navigating hair loss, illness, trauma, and life-altering transitions. What became painfully clear was how often melanated skin, textured hair, and the emotional realities tied to beauty were overlooked.
That gap between luxury and intention became her calling. The result is a brand committed to plant-based, effective products that nourish not just hair and skin, but confidence and self-worth. “This brand is about more than aesthetics,” Ellis explains. “It’s about restoration.”
Building 5 Star Beauty Collection, however, was far from glamorous. Like many Black women entrepreneurs, she faced barriers that had nothing to do with talent or vision. Access to capital, manufacturing, distribution, and credibility proved to be one of the greatest challenges.
“I had to learn how to advocate for myself, protect my intellectual property, and move with both faith and strategy,” she says. Her entrepreneurial journey unfolded alongside personal hardship, including homelessness, domestic violence, and systemic obstacles that might have stopped someone else in their tracks. For her, resilience wasn’t optional, it was required.
That resilience is evident in the brand’s newest launch: a lipstick collection already generating buzz for its boldness and intention. More than a beauty product, the collection is deeply symbolic. “It’s a love letter and a declaration,” she says. Each shade reflects the complexity of Black womanhood, soft yet powerful, refined yet unapologetic.
“These lipsticks aren’t just colors; they’re statements,” she adds. “They say, I belong. I am worthy. I take up space.”
The creative process behind the collection began not with pigment, but with emotion. Before selecting shades, she asked a more important question: How should a woman feel when she applies this? Confidence. Ease. Authority. From there, she meticulously studied undertones, skin depth, wearability, and ingredients, remaining hands-on through formulation and packaging to ensure every detail aligned with the brand’s vegan-friendly, skin-conscious standards. “Nothing was rushed,” she says. “Purpose never is.”
Like every product-based business, 5 Star Beauty Collection faced a defining moment—one that would determine whether the brand would remain small or scale with intention. That moment came when stepping into national retail.
“It forced me to let go of the ‘do everything myself’ mindset,” she explains. Scaling required structure, discipline, and systems to support the vision. Today, she runs her business with clarity, boundaries, and data while still honoring intuition. “I don’t chase opportunities,” she says. “I build alignment.”
As both founder and face of the brand, balance remains essential. She’s learned that visibility opens doors, but sustainability keeps them open. Delegation, trust, and rest treated as a strategy rather than a reward allow her to lead effectively without burnout. “I protect my energy,” she says simply.
Staying relevant in a fast-moving beauty market means listening closely and consistently. “Innovation comes from proximity,” she explains. By remaining deeply connected to her customers, community, and culture, she avoids trend-chasing and instead responds to real needs. Education and strategic partnerships further expand her perspective, but authenticity remains the anchor. “Relevance is rooted in purpose,” she says.
Representation is not a buzzword for 5 Star Beauty Collection it’s a responsibility. The brand reflects its values through inclusive hiring, honest storytelling, and reinvestment into the community. Mentorship, education, access, and visibility are not side initiatives; they are integral to the mission. “I want people to see themselves not just using the product,” she says, “but building the legacy.”
Looking back, there’s one lesson she wishes she had learned sooner: everything doesn’t require a yes. “Discernment is just as powerful as ambition,” she says. Saying no to misaligned partnerships, rushed timelines, and distractions would have saved time, money, and energy. Alignment, she’s learned, is always more valuable than opportunity.
For aspiring beauty entrepreneurs feeling overwhelmed by the process, her advice is clear and grounded. “Begin with clarity,” she says. “Know why you’re starting before you worry about how.” Study the business, protect the brand, start small but intentional, and build relationships not just products. And above all, don’t rush purpose.
“If this calling is in your life,” she says, “the path will unfold step by step. Trust that.”
